Since Maryland is a border state, it sent men to both the North and the South during the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Civil War<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Union names are listed on the north side of the monument, Confederates on the south.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While visiting Chestertown, stop in the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/garpost25.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">G.A.R. This space was created in 1908 by local African American Union veterans from the Civil War. Revolutionary War Historical Battleground<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kentcounty.com\/1812\/battle-caulks-field\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Battle of Caulk\u2019s Field<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> occurred August 30-31 in 1814 in Kent County. The British navy had the task of blockading American ships on the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chesapeake Bay<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and transporting Royal Marines and sailors to points of attack. Using a fleet of battle-rigged ships, they harassed and disrupted American military, commerce, and citizens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, Caulk\u2019s Field is Maryland\u2019s best-preserved War of 1812 Battlefield and remains relatively unaltered. To keep it preserved, you may not physically enter Caulk\u2019s Field, but you can admire it from afar.
